"..I never met anyone who wasn't important.."

'please forgive this mini-rant,'but I've read various comments here and there bemoaning the reaction on 'social media' to the recent celebrity deaths and that those deaths are no more 'important' than the thousands of others who have died since the year began and feel the need to at least try to express my feelings and viewpoint as much for myself as anyone...

"Everyone knows that everyone dies.."

..In the same period we have lost a friend in tragic circumstances and friends and neighbours have lost family members, their losses are personal and are mourned as such..at work I have also witnessed people loose battles with injury and illness, but these 'celebrity' deaths are different in that the reaction to them is really not just about the person who has died...

"Great chunks of my past, detaching themselves like melting icebergs...."

Many of celebrities who have died are the heroes and icons of my childhood, whether it be Victoria Wood or Ronnie Corbet,Bowie or Prince,Alan Rickman or David Margulies, these are the faces, the voices, the talents that helped define my childhood and by extension,me..

"I am being diminished. Whittled away, piece by piece. A man is the sum of his memories, you know....."

and I am as sad for myself, for the 'lost' of another  part of my childhood as I am for the loss of the person.
It makes me realise that I am getting older and am becoming  more and more aware of my own mortality..
selfish? probably ,silly? perhaps, and the world of course keeps spinning regardless, but that doesn't mean it isn't a valid response, these people entertained, inspired, made me think and made me laugh..

"every life is a pile of good things and… bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant."

these people added to my

"pile of good things".

And for that I am grateful.
